Microsoft unveiled their new multi-touch system today, called Surface. These touch systems are nothing new. The idea of multi-touch screen interaction has been around since the 80’s, and generally belongs to Jeff Han of NYU’s concept lab.

Microsoft has taken a step forward here with Surface’s ability to recognize other digital devices, such as your PDA or digital camera. This hopes to transform the way people interact with everyday devices. Simply place your device on the Surface table, and it instantly connects and begins communicating with it; most likely through an upcoming Bluetooth release which will carry more data, faster.

Of course, these puppies won’t be for the general consumer population just yet. Surface will debut this Winter in the $10,000 neighborhood, making this a great idea for casinos gaming, hotel reservations, airline kiosks, and retail presentations. Say goodbye to the keyboard and mouse!
